In the selection of a table to be at, it is imperative- if you want success- to first realize and accept the ceiling you would be involved in. Here is what a few experts suggest: have approximately 500 times the sum of the BB, that for your bankroll funds. Like, if you would be in a .50/one dollar table at the NL TABLES, the bankroll must be around 500 dollars. It would permit you to play without getting "chicken", since you know that you have a bffer to serve you.
Another thing that should not escape your attention, the buyin. Some experts would say this: (and I concur)- play with around sixty percent of the max buyin. Like, if the max buyin is one hundred dollars, buy in with sixty to one hundred, simple math huh?
One last thing, and I do not mean to sound like a priest or your dad, but please be responsible. If that money in your glove compartment has been earmarked for the month's food and groceries, give your wife/husband a break. Don't touch it, if the bankroll has run out, at least call her first and tell her you'll be using it. At least she would no longer be shouting at you when you get home, and if you do win, she might even be happy.

If you have the top pair at a heads up pot, you would probably bet up to the turn/flop, what if the river gives a frightening holding?
Answer: all depending on the position, if you hold the edge, say you are the button, he checks, you are then thinking of a value wager, but you are afraid of a checkraise, what then? Let us frther assume that you have a 2/3 odds of winning, remember these. There would be scenarios where he would simply call with a stronger set, but would not raise. Then, there would be times when he would keep on raising even if you are actually the holder of a stronger set.
Use a good sense of judgement, if you should bet or not. There is no gospel truth here, it should be taken on a case-to-case basis. Do not be very afraid if just one kind of hand could defeat you, if you are so afraid, then you would always be hesitating. That or your judgement would be impaired.
When you are in the early seat, be willing to wager, and why so? Even if he has a fighting hand, he would raise/bet, so, you'll just be sacrificing only 1 bet.

He was born in 1951, name of Humberto Brenes, and to say that he is among the unique poker warriors in existence right now would not be an exaggeration. This guy could be seen at the games donning a track suit that is so colorful you might be in danger of getting blinded instantly, parallel to the notorious self-spontaneous combustion we read in mystery documentaries. He also wears on occasion, two sets of glasses, as if these would give him special (extra) powers at the poker room. These funny looks come in with funny actions, like, he has a shark figurine, and he tinkers with this during play.
"Yeah sure, but is he a good card player?- would be a good question. Well, let me answer it this way, he has won not one, but two WSOP BRACELETS. Also, he lasted up to many final tables of the WPT events, which are accomplishments by themselves.
A bit of personal: he got a degree in industrial engineering, from Univ of Costa Rica. At present, he owns a TV entity plus a set of dining establishments. I do not know about you, but if all poker players were like this guy, (in the aspect of multi-facetedness), poker would appear to be more glamorous in the eyes of many, but that is just a humble opinion.

"Farha On Omaha" has gotten good reviews, both from readers and his esteemed colleagues. If Doyle Brunson himself gave it a 'BIG OK', then this must surely be a great book. Great would have to be subjective, for I refuse to call it great. What I would call it is that, it is better than many poker books that came out these past years, and it is a worthy collection piece for any serious card warrior.
When was it published: just October of 2007, and it has close to 200 pages containing this pro's experiences. OF COURSE, it holds tips and good advice.
Farha elaborated on his actual experiences, starting from his salad days, and how the poker rooms underwent an evolution, from a serious wagering site to a socialization factor in today's world. It could be argued of course, but on this score, I tend to concur with this author. If you call gun-drawing by the Old West guys a kind of socialization, well, the author and I are wrong.
CEO of Mirage Resort, Baldwin, said that Sammy could be categorized as the ideal author, and he described the pro's playing style as agressive, action-based.
This book could be found in many bookstores not just here in the country, and it has its equivalent at the Net. Well, so much for that, all due respect to this pro, I like his playing more than his writing, but that is just me.

Annie Duke is known by a couple of flattering names, like "duchess of Power"...er, I mean "of Poker", and Annie Legend. When I hear people saying "she is one of the strongest in the world, as far as women are concerned"- I immediately retort, "she is one of the strongest in the world, period". Then usually, a heated debate would follow, which I would relish or not, depending on my mood.
Anyway, way back in 2004, Duke won two million dollars in WSOP's Tournament of Champions, this momentous event was a momentous winner gets all thing, and it was participated in by some of the strongest in the world. Proof: from that, she guested on the show of Letterman, which should tell you a great deal about this lady's clout and fan base.
She is now also into writing, and the book is entitled, 'How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at the World Series of Poker'- and you might be amused (if not interested) by this: a friend of mine (male, straight) bought that book. When I asked him why he did so, he answered, just "for one reason, I wanted to find out about the FLIRTING, so I would know if a female competitor is simply weird or is flirting with me'.
Hmm...an interesting reason, well, it's his money, it's his book, and maybe, even the Duchess of Poker might be enticed to smile.

There are countless online rooms we have at present, and if you do not have a regular room yet, here are some questions you have to answer before parting with your hard-earned cash:
# Do they have a 24-7 customer relations/support department? Regarding slots/poker, what's the lowest denomination that could be availed of? (If it is a major site, it would have quarters, nickels, dollars and 5$ games).
# Video poker: what variants do they have? The rule of thumb (for lack of a better phrase) would be 3 kinds, let this convince you that the room is not dirt-poor like some entities.
# Do they have a good or a bad image? Related to this is, have there been issues against them raised by people vis-a-vis payouts?
# Do they have a landbased counterpart? (This is an important consideration, it is always assuring to get an address which you know you can go to, in case of problems or conflicts).
# IN terms of payments, would it take them hours, days, weeks or months? (You would not believe this, but I have a friend who waited for SIX months just to get a payout worth 2 grand, he surely has the patience of a saint).

It is still quite a distance from this year's WSOP, but as early as now, Harrah's Entertainment already came out with their statement. The full schedule that is, and in an unprecedented move, the grand tradition would begin and terminated with the one-thousand dollar World Championship tourneys.
Just like last year's offerings, fifty-five events all in all would be hosted. In case you failed to know, last year's prize monies were the biggest, close to 160 million dollars, and for this year, both experts and observers are expecting that record to be beaten. Well, I will not hold my breath, gut feel tells me it would stay.
May 30 is the target date, if plans fall according to the path prepared. Things would be done by July 16 with of course, the climax of this poker tradition, the Main Event of the WSOP. For those who are forgetting, it is a ten grand buyin affair. (Hmm...I'd better get that money as early as now, in case I do not qualify via the satellites).
One favorite is the very much sought-after HORSE, and this affair is composed of five varying Limit games, and you may not believe it, but this event has been "invented" to shoo away the neophytes, and to entice the strongest warriors of the card game. There, I'll see you guys there, on second thought, if I don't get to prepare the ten grand, maybe you won't.

Imagine this scene, you meet the trio of Amigos, and the music of a guitar in the background, and this does not appeal to you, what about a 2500X (of chosen denomination) prize? This two-coin, 1-line slots game is also giving a one-coin wager at 1200X if the Tres Amigos congregate. Oh, how forgetful of me, sorry, yes, Tres Amigos slot is what we have on our plate for today.
If you like food, well, three tacos would maybe arouse your appetite. If you do not eat tacos in real life, then what about this: a pay out of (times) 1000? Other symbols are maracas, cactus, chili peppers and of course, the musical instrument mentioned, the guitar. One regular occurrence at the middle line are the red peppers, and 3 appearing all at the same time would give a 200X reward if it's a maximum wager. If it's not a max wager, oh well, so sorry. Two of the symbols would give 10X while a singular pepper would merit a times-four pay.
There, before I finish this, a little hint for you slots lovers: max coin wager would give bigger rewards in this game, just like so many other slots games. Many options are available in the way of denominations: dimes, nickels, quarters, among others.
Now, I'd have to go to the grocery, believe it or not, I need red peppers, and I cannot find a single one in the refrigerator.

It can be said that in the realm of strategies, changing gears is one of those that the veteran cash players do not particularly care for. They do it because, because, it's there, in the same way that a chessplayer would do a positional trick not because he loves it, but because the books say it is a good thing to do.
Going back to poker, in tourneys, changing gears is an essential part of the arsenal. A prerequisite, one of them, requiring a change in gears is if the blinds go up, when the blinds hold a small value (this in S AND G TOURNEYS), gambler would have to be less aggressive, and looser too. But as the worth of the blinds go up, the fight and the pressures in contention to the pot would also build up.
One other situation: the normal play, and what is this? One has to be capable of mixing up the maneuvers and patterns one is so used to doing. A very predictable gambler would most probably not survive up to the Final table of the competition, and that my friends, is both my personal and professional opinion.

Let me say this up front, I am not a Keno buff, but I do know how to play the game. I know some hints or two which I use on the rare occasions that I engage in the game. I do respect its merits, thus, when a friend of mine was moaning and complaining to me that poker is putting such pressure on him, I asked him, "from where does the pressures come?"
"All of it, the necessity to read the latest books, the necessity to keep up on improving myself lest I see myself as the only fish left at my regular casino, everything". I gave him this shot, "Have you tried Keno?".
Huh?- he threw me a look as if I told him that his grandmother in fact, masterminded the assasination of JFK. I pointed out the following to him: He could drink his beer at the casino lounge, ask the runner for a keno card, then take a nap right then and there, hopefully not spilling the beer all over his lap. When he wakes up from a 5-minute sleep, he could then ask the runner for his ticket for checking. If he is a good tipper, he could ask the tipper to bring him another beer, all of this without standing up.
Of course, in poker, he is also seated, but he would then have to do all those hard work, right computing river's odds right?

Lest you think I have converted this gambling blog into a beauty-pageant-oriented site, you are wrong. Let's just say that this particular person has merged both worlds into one, at least as far as she is concerned.
Clonie Gowen turned into a poker pro during a scuba adventure in Costa Rica, at that point in her life, she entered the WPT Season 1. She finished at a very impressive 10th place, giving her the rights to join the WPT's Ladies Nite and in that event, she made a lot of heads turn. (I am referring to heads of pros, not just ordinary spectators). She was able to beat other players who've had more experience than she had.
Let me go to a bit of personal history here- hers, NOT MINE. She won the Ms Teen Oklahoma when she was in a very innocent age, fifteen that is. She was still in high school then, and she was both a jump track athlete and a varsity basketball player. Talk about a multi-talented figure, I wonder if she still plays hoops during her lull moments?
Anyway, going away from her lull moments to her busy moments in poker action, here are some tidbits: she won 3rd place at the $20,000 No Limit Hold'em championship hosted by a leading online gambling room, this was in 2005. Another, she finished 31st at Atlantic's WPT Borgata Poker Open, and that was still another laudable achievement.

After poker's fame (online, we are talking online here), blackjack could be said to be the number two. The traditional game, when it got embraced into the online genre, has been a big hit, but here comes another one. With the fresh versions of the multi-player blackjack, one could have the thrill, win the cash, and be friends with other gamblers at the other side of the continent. (Whichever continent you may be, just think of the farthest one from yours).
This is the thing, until recent periods, blackjack has been played online just on a 1-on-1 basis, which means, the gambler versus the dealer of the room. Technological leaps in gambling softwares now permit multi-playing, which means, the person would be joining many other persons akin to the landbased venues.
Pretty much, the game is basically the same, the cards would be given faster, and due to the chatting capabilities, this would present more fun to the sociable person.
(My neighbor's brother, I was told, paid to register with a blackjack room for thesole purpose of chatting. Funny, he would not know what "splitting" would mean even if threatened with a gun the size of Kingkong).
One last word, if you are an "addict" of the software genre, you may just scoff at this freshly-born gambling kind, but hey, why don't you try it on for size? You may realize it's OK after all, huh?

Allowing the dealer break- that is one thing so many blackjack buffs disregard, but it could be very disastrous for you if he/she is at 3rd base post. Here is my first tip: when you are in a game where a total moron is always hitting the dealer's break card, say adieu to that table, there are so many of them (tables, not morons, at least I hope so).
A very "cold" dealer must be allowed all chances of hitting his set, when he gets a good hitting hand, remember, the break card would come later. When he gets a break hand, then he would break, as simple as that. When you are in this kind of game, exploit it by parlaying the wagers. The bad news for you is: if you think cold dealers are as easy to find as a Walmart store, you are dead wrong.
Here is another hint: play 2 or 3 hands simultaneously if against the cold dealers. Here is a little insider's tip, which may not be "insider" after all, so many know this already. A dealer can go cold for the whole shift, and the boss would not like that, but for as long as deliberate cheating occurs, that boss would probably just bear it.
The dealer would like his "coldness" and why so? His tips would go up by a mile and a half, as everybody around him is winning.

Online, there are two things that stand out- first, the true identity of the opponents remain hidden. Another, the turnover rate (coming and going) at any particular online table is much faster compared to a landbased setting.
In the major rooms, they have the "player note sections", and if you are really intent on becoming a poker master anytime soon, you would have to start getting into the habit of using this. One could note down important notes, like "very intelligent, Mensa material" or "more stupid than Forrest Gump". If you do not want to be wordy, then just put in patient or impatient, loose or tight, that sort of thing.
This habit would keep you on your toes, and prevent you from emulating what my friend Ollan does half of the time- he falls asleep facedown on the keyboard. Besides that, it would be quite helpful if you are about to make a tough decision or about to embark on the biggest bluff of your life.
Then we go to hand histories, the major online rooms allow features empowering gamblers to receive histories of the hands. Do not rejoice too much, it is not necessarily a big edge, after all, if you are allowed, all your opponents are allowed too. Consider this as chess: if you are given an extra queen before the commencement of the game, yet your opponent gets one too, it just complicates things right?
Monday, December 17. 2007
Obviously, when one is online, you cannot possibly see your opponent put out his tongue whenever he gets the pocket aces. Still, there are tells online that could help you win, or at least help you go for the win anyway. That is, if you know what to look for, here are a few.
Chatbox: how talkative somebody is (or silence) could be a tell, not all the time mind you, but use this as a general guideline. When somebody who has been so noisy suddenly gets silent as a tree stump, then chances are, he has a fighting set. Then, if somebody suddenly becomes obnoxious as an Orc, then there is a good chance he is throwing a bluff into the air. Those players who swear a lot, they could be on tilt too, it would be a good idea to enter the faceoff with somebody like this, but of course, if you just engage in a cursing match with him at the chatbox, that is another story.
To wait for the BB: you could try posting a BB, then begin playing at once. It is a good tell, if a player has the virtue of patience or not. If he is impatient, then he might just be impatient too on good starting sets. This you can use to your advantage, don't waste it.

In Keno gambling, the straight ticket is the term for the simplest way of playing, and since it is the simplest, it is the most popular. In this kind of ticket, gambler would wager on just one set of digits. One would pick and mark the digits, and long-time players would usually opt from between four and the eight spots, after that, decide the amount to be bet, how many to be played using that combination. Assuming you are a newbie, it is most advisable to begin with this kind of gambling, just to get the hang of the genre. You can move on to the other things once you have gotten your feet wet, so to speak.
What about the Split kind of tickets? This is just a manner of making more than 1 straight ticket wager on still the same entry. Every game is marked by circling, to segregate off one set of digits. At the split ticket, every game should have its own special numbers, a given digit could be part of just one game, meaning to say: overlapping is a no-no.
There, finished- for today- I'll see you at the Keno games. You can give me your numbers, I'm sick and tired of my own.

The software makers in the industry, those who are considered as the movers and shakers anyway, like Microgaming and RTG, offer the French, European and the American kinds of game. Let me zero in on Microgaming, in their casinos, (most) five versions of the game could be enjoyed. They are: Roulette Royale, French, European gold, European, American of course. If out of these five you cannot find what your heart desires, my friend, not to hurt your feelings, but roulette is not your thing. Maybe poker or craps would be better as far as your interests are concerned.
The roulette royale is different in the sense it has a progressive wager. Then, the French roulette is easily recognized by this fact- it proffers the call wagers and the La Partage. Then, going to the European and the European Gold, the latter has call bets too, while the other kind doesn't. Of course, you already know the difference between the European and the American, I am no longer rehashing it. Good grief milords...(ehr, allow the British accent, just today)...I have mentioned that a thousand times ovah.
Well, last: a tip to the newbies, since you are still new, there is no need to be so particular. Whichever of the 5 you set your eyes on, the important thing is for you to know and memorize the most crucial rules, the odds and the elementary mandates of the game. You can always switch to another variant when you are already well-versed in the rudiments.
Monday, December 3. 2007
Calling Usually is not Preferable: take note, this is a general idea, and if you follow it like it was God's gospel, then you'll be losing pots that should have been yours.
In the NL games, a strong player knows that somebody who always calls is one of the fish. The calling hands would more often than not, make you go to a disadvantage. When the hand is borderline, not worthy of being raised, then do not play it to begin with.
One more danger of calling: strong competitors would bet to you, just because you have called prior to the flop stage.
Now the raising: he who raises controls and dominates, not 100% of the time, but again, it's a general idea. If you raise, you tell your opponents, "look, I am not kidding", when they miss out on the flop, they are crushed and annihilated. It applies to any form of poker but most particularly in NL, whereas in the Limit, it is more difficult to bet one out of a pot because the big bet is usually low, "usually" as in regularly. When a short-stacked gambler is at a L game, he could be bluffed after raising.
Wednesday, November 28. 2007
Aggressiveness: betting is usually desirable to calling if we look at the NL genre. If one bets, he could win if he has the stronger set or the opponent throws down the cards. When one calls, he could only win if he really has the competitor beaten, and if one bets, he would move the size of the bet.
When a gambler is the caller, he is of course praying that somebody would be paying later, and the cruciality of aggression is the reason for this fact: tight-passive gamblers could win more in Limit than in NL.
The power to adjust: various games call for various amounts of aggressiveness. As you can see, this and the first one are closely linked. Games of shorter duration mandate that one be more aggressive (looser too), but if there are many loose competitors, it would be advisable for one to get tighter and exercise the "waiting game". Wait for the really strong cards, that is.
Do not disregard the kind of opponent you have, it is one thing to be in the middle of so many fish, and it is totally different to be facing a horde of sharks. In the first, you attack them without fear of getting hurt (hurt too much), while in the second, you attack at your own peril, for sharks (the poker kind, not the sea creature) are defense masters too.
Monday, November 26. 2007
The "stage" should be prepared: here is a little advise which trust me, I learned from an old mentor (God REST his soul). Play some trash cans er, trash hands at once in the beginning, then limp at a few occasions...all this when the blinds are still small. It would prevent the opposition from coming up with the table image for you. If you want, discombobulate them by doing a Caro thing: burn some 100$ bills right in front of you. If you want to do the last one, be prepared to be reprimanded by the arbiters, from what I know now, this kind of thing is no longer kosher.
Also, speaking of image, you have to know what yours is. Like, if you are the PCO type of person, that is- Premium Card Only, then you'll be labelled as "weak".
Another, carefulness is an asset of the "truly great": survive and survive while at the same time, do your best to kick out one or two from the field. If somebody raises you, think of the question: "Exactly how much can I afford to lose on this one?"
Last one, make at least one friend. I know, it has nothing to do with the play per se. Think of this though, if you get kicked out very early, that friend might be the only fruitful thing that comes out after travelling hundreds of kilometers from your place.

Shocked, surprised, discombobulated? Well, you may not believe it, it's a rarity yes, but I know at least two casinos that offer bingo on their floors. Besides, did you know that in some Asian countries (particularly the Philippines), bingo is a recreation-cum-gambling obsession?
Having said that, let me give the rudiments of the game. Game begins when the host reveals the pattern to be "built". Host would shout out the letter, B, I, N, G, O that's for columns, while the numbers go from zero to seventy.
Watch out for the number called, then label it at once. Host would continue calling out the numbers/letters until somebody ends up with the targeted pattern. Person with the finished pattern would shout out "bingo" to tell everybody that the game is now done. Host would then check, either by getting the person's card or by the winner verbalizing the numbers.
Unlike in the lotteries, where some of the time the winner would spend so much time waiting for the windfall, prize monies usually are given right after the game. Then, another game may start right off, it could be the same design (the pattern) or a different one. The prizes may differ too, it all depends on the host or the hosting venue (in the casinos I was telling you about, in one them at least, a car was the Top Prize).
There, bingo anyone (I am not selling cards, but my cousin does own a bingo parlor)?

Somebody threw this question at me in a gambling lecture I gave many weeks ago, "I know somebody who is a good dice controller, everybody knows he is one, even his regular casino's security. Why are they not kicking him out the door? I am sure he does not have a backer up in the management team".
Interesting question, and here is the answer: imagine that guy (whoever he is) walking up to a half-filled craps table, then all of a sudden, somebody who is just watching shouted for everybody to hear, "Look at this guy, he has not sevened-out for the past 45 minutes, and he is betting BIG!" Not 2 minutes have passed and the lukewarm attendance of the table became history, it suddenly becomes the hottest table on the floor.
Many of those who joined late think they have found a Hot Game, not realizing they just joined a table with a Hot Gambler...it's a big difference. The money earned by the casino from all the players (except Dice controller) would still be bigger than what the Dice Controller is getting from the House, right?
That is the reason why some (a few?) casinos tolerate dice-control experts, THAT was the answer I gave.

The winning streaks in craps are those when the shooter does not hit the 7, for quite some time. One could exploit this by betting on the PL, supporting that with free odds and putting in multiple Come bets.
Pros of the game would disagree on exactly how many Come wagers to dish out. There are those who make them on each roll until all point digits have been used. This is too risky, at least for my tastes, if not for yours, then go ahead. More conservative for me is: putting a max of 2 Come wagers, added to the initial PL wagers, would provide the gambler 3 numbers constantly activated. If one of them hits, gambler would put another Come wager to maintain the running of the 3 digits. Try it out, just for size if nothing else, you might get a big surprise.
Now, just a little word on the DP line: it is more or less the opposite of PL. When you bet on it, you are wagering against the game's shooter, that is the essence of it. This however is not a popular one and for obvious reasons. Many times I've seen two friends had a falling out because the other one made a DP when the other was the shooter. Oh well, call it juvenile, but that is that. It is also termed "wrong bettor", usually winning when most of the field are losing, and the other way around.

In poker, to win more games than what you'll lose, there are so many things to bear in mind: applying what you have read in books, choosing the right table, the seat position, the kind of image you will be known to have, all these and more.
Next would be the tactics of deception, and I do not mean to say something as crude as picking your seatmate's chips when he is not looking, if you want to do that, let me just say this. The odds are against you, if it's a big field, somebody is bound to see you making off with somebody's money. Bluffing is one of these deception tactics, and the stronger you are as a bluffer, the more pots you would be able to steal, and that is not an opinion.
Now, we go to my main point, folding. Folding is thought of as cowardice by some, but trust me on this, those who keep on saying that are losers, big-time losers at that. Advantages of conceding your hand: you can relax, no more thinking. Two, you can now call your girlfriend and demand to know why she stood you up and made you wait for 21 hours. Three, if you do not want to call her because waiting for 21 hours is no big deal in your relationship, you can go to work. You can then observe the competitors and memorize some tells. Four, and this is probably the best, you save up on money. There is a fifth, you can then take your revenge at the guy who gave you a bad beat, you can do a "trash talk" meant for him, just make sure it's not a tourney setting. The director might just pounce on you.
Thursday, October 25. 2007
Just like so many games (both cards and others), the history of poker is up to now, being disputed. Many circles say that it started as a German contest, but of course, there are other thoughts on the matter. (I even have an acquaintance who insists that biblical records can prove that it already existed in Christ's time, I don't know about you, but I cringe every time I am near the guy. Next time we see each other, it would not surprise me one bit if he says the soldiers at the foot of the cross during the Crucifixion were playing 7 Card Stud AND not a dice game).
Going to 7 Card Stud in particular, it was easily the most loved variant from the era of the 1850s up to the 1970s. At present, Holdem is far and away the world's most famous poker variant, but 7 Card Stud is still holding on to a significant fan base.
Now, how does this game go: the gamblers would first and foremost, settle the ante, then, the gambler receives two hole cards plus one upcard. Everybody has just one card seen by the group, he who holds the smallest ranking would be forced to start the very first betting session. The bet should be the same as half of the lower limit, and in a way, it is not significantly different from Holdem, but the variances are notable.
Betting has the choices of calling, checking, raising and of course, the most courageous (ah-hurm) of them all, running away to fight another round, in other word, fold. When the 1st betting session is done, 3 upcards are given, with betting session between every session. Lastly, a 4th card is given (facedown) and a last round of wagering would ensue.
